A new New York Times Magazine feature is bringing national attention to an issue too many families, schools, and systems still overlook: millions of children and teens in the United States are caregiving at home.
The article, “The U.S. Relies on Family Caregivers. Millions of Them Are Kids,” highlights the daily realities of young people who help care for parents, grandparents, siblings, and other loved ones while also trying to manage school, friendships, and their own futures.
For caregiving youth, these responsibilities can include helping with meals, medication, mobility, translation, emotional support, household tasks, and other forms of care that often go unseen.
At the Colorado Alliance for Caregiving Youth, we believe recognition is the first step toward support. Young caregivers deserve to be seen, valued, and connected to systems that understand what they are carrying.
We are grateful to the American Association of Caregiving Youth and the families who continue helping bring this issue into the national conversation.
